Week 22 Recaps

Each of the matchups this week had the potential to impact the playoff race, but ultimately, we enter the playoffs the same way that we would have if week 22 had never happened.  There were 10 Escalator Club memberships punched this week, and a couple of more would have qualified had they gotten more than a handful of plate appearances. For the last time in the 2014 regular season, lets hit the recaps.  But first, one more time...with feeling:

UCCMA (133-117-14) - 8
Huckleberries (105-141-18) - 2
Tie - 2 (R, 24; SB, 3)

It finally happened.  On one end of the spectrum we have the Yanger Zone to signify players who hit 000/000/000 for an entire week, but no one had been the Unbreakable to his Mr. Glass...until now.  Carlos Gomez hit 1000/1000/1000 this week (who cares that it was only 1 PH at bat on Sunday), meaning someone has finally acheived perfection and that man is Gomez!  So, should another man improbably hit 1000/1000/1000 for a week, he will be said to have Gomezed (and shudders just ran down John's spine...sorry John, its like Nightmare on Elm Street come to life.)  In other news in this matchup, both Buster Posey (565/593/957 8R 8RBI) and Michael Brantley (444/500/519 4R 4RBI 2SB) Escalatored for Jimmy while Javier Baez (083/214/125 1R) hit the adjustment window like a sparrow who didnt see it coming.  On the flip side, Danny Santana (417/440/500 7R 1RBI 3SB) continued to show the Twinks that he belongs in the discussion as part of the next contending MN team (think 2018) and makes an interesting case to be kept as a keeper with is 320/358/475 season line in 354 plate appearances.  Also, Victor Martinez (who needs to present no case to be kept) continued his monster season with a 480/567/960 6R 7RBI line for Kevin.  On the hill, Jim won 5 of the 6 categories, but didnt get a truely dominant effort from anyone on the staff.  Tyson Ross struck out 15 over 2 starts, but those Ks were accompanied by a 1.63 WHIP.  The recently traded Wade Davis had 4 SV/H and 0.00/0.67 ratios, and Joe Smith picked up a pair of rogue wins to lead the staff.  Kevin got the weeks best SP effort, as Gio Gonzalez picked up a pair of wins to go with 3.00/0.83 ratios, but only got 7 Ks.  Trevor Rosenthal picked up a win and 3 SV/H to lead the relievers.

MBHB (131-121-12) - 8
Dust Bunnies (117-132-15) - 4

The plan was simple.  All Dusty had to do was beat the Bastards by 8.5 or more and he was in the playoffs.  Unfortunately for Dusty, he fell behind early and, despite a super human effort from Miguel Cabrera (500/500/1067 8R 9RBI), wasnt able to catch up.  For the Bastards, first time starter Chris Carter did what Chris Carter does...catch touchdowns hit BOMBS.  Carter finished the week 444/524/1000 5R 7RBI 1SB filling in for the injured Anthony Rizzo who was filling in for the injured Paul Goldschmidt.  Carter strikes out entirely too often and is one of the few players who may end up with more HRs + 2bs + BBs than singles in any given year (currently 100 to 105 singles), but, damn if that Houston offense isnt starting to get interesting fast.  With Carter, Altuve, Spinger, Dexter Fowler and Matt Dominguez on the big squad and a bevy of prospects including Carlos Correa and Jon Singleton  (if he ever figures out how to not strikeout every other at bat), the Astros are a lot closer to winning than people realize.  If not winning, they are a lot closer to destroying a large number of baseballs (and strikeout records).  I am all in on the 2015 Houston Astro offense.  If they offer free tacos and do a completely unnecessary countdown to the free tacos, I will officially adopt the 2015 Stros as my favorite AL team.  Also for MBHB (back to fantasy), Oscar Taveras (in extremely limited action) finally started hitting like the top prospect that everyone promised he was, posting a 500/583/800 3R 4RBI line that will keep him in the Bastards starting lineup for another week.
On the hill, Dusty's SPs were fairly strong, but they only had 5 starts on the week, leading Dusty to lose all the counting categories.  For MBHB, Cole Hamels had a pair of quality starts (including the first 6 innings of the first combined No-Hitter in the 132 year history of the Philadelphia Phillies), but the real hero of the matchup was Brad Boxberger and his 2W 7K 0.00/0.25 1SV/H.  If only Dusty hadnt fallen asleep behind the wheel during the middle of the season...

ZAttack (130-122-12) - 6
Bobs ATers (150-96-18) - 5
Tie - 1 (SV/H, 6)

In a preview of what might be the first league championship, the two division winners squared off with Zach needing to put in a good showing to clinch the first round bye.  His win is nice, but with Tom and Kyler struggling, Zach would have clinched the bye with a much more mediocre showing.  Instead, Zach takes a win over the top team in the league into the bye.  The ZAttack was led by How Many Altuves (429/455/714 5R 4RBI 2SB) and a Nelson Cruz ressurection (407/467/963 6R 12RBI). Zach even started Shin Soo Choo, who is on the DL and is out for the year, as a giant "F" you to Bob.  Zach told me (through a medium, since I have never actually talked to Zach), "Bob can suck it.  I dont even need to field a full team to beat his bunch of scroats."  Bobs scroats struggled on offense, with no one player standing out for the week.  Jose Abreu finished with 0s in the runs and RBI categories.  Dee Gordon didnt steal a base.  Billy Hamilton finished 200/273/200.  Yuck.  Luckily, they have time to get their heads right before taking on the winner of Les Moles vs MBHB (i think...I have no idea if they re-seed or not).  On the bump, Zach got spectacular outings from Shelby Miller (1 QS 5K 0.00/0.86) and Clayton Kershaw (1W 8K 1.13/0.63 ho hum) and a decent outing from Jeff Samardzija (9K 0.86 WHIP but 5.14 ERA), as well as 14 Ks across a pair of starts from Zach Wheeler, but he was able to take only 2 pitching categories.  Bob's SP group of Wainwright, Sale, Jordan Zimmerman, Yordano Ventura, Alex Wood, and Marcus aStroman combined for 5W 37K and 7 QS.  Each of them had an ERA under 3 for the week.  Even better than the SPs, the RPs combined for 11 Ks 6 SV/H and didnt allow a single run.

Les Moles (129-124-11) - 5
MTMTAS (114-129-21) - 4
Tie - 3 (W, 3; QS, 5; SV/H, 1)

Pick me a winner Drew.
Coming into Sunday, this matchup had a very different feel.  Tyler was up 9-3, which combined with Kyler being down 11-1 meant that Tyler was in the playoffs and Kyler was out.  I sent Kyler a text in the morning asking if he was hoping for his team to turn it around or for Tom's to start playing well.  He responded with, "Both," but he was hoping that Tom's team would come around because he didnt have much confidence in his own.  Luckily, Tom's team did come around, lead by Adrian Gonzalez's 6 Sunday RBIs and 292/370/667 4R 9RBI week.  Other than Gonzo and Mauer (333/448/458 4R 5RBI), Tom's hitters were fairly average this week.  Tyler's hitters couldnt even be called that, with Allen Craig (059/273/059 0R 0RBI), Andrelton Simmons (130/167/130 1R 2RBI) and Alex Gordon (158/304/316 4R 3RBI 2SB) all failing to reach the Mendoza line and Jay Bruce (200/200/500 2R 5RBI) barely getting there.  On the pitching side, Tyler won 3 of the categories and the other 3 were tied (I think this is the first time that Tom hasnt won a pitching category in a week).   Drew Smyly (15K 2.31/0.94)  and Corey Kluber (1W 10K 1.51/1.11 1QS) led the way for the Moors while David Price (1W 19K 3.45/1.28 1QS) and Jon Lester (5K 2.25/0.88 1QS) pitched well in vain for Les Moles.

Week 22 MSSSMRMoW -

John's beatdown of Kyler is week 22's Mike Shaw
Subaru Super Mo Replay Matchup of the Week.

This is it.  The last of the Mike Shaw Subaru Super Mo Replay Matchup of the Week.  Next season, we will look for new corporate sponsorship options and will likely move on from the Shaw.  It's been a great run and I know that I have gotten far more enjoyment out of a random Subaru dealer in Colorado than any one person should be able to.  I hope that some of the rest of you have as well.  If you have ideas for next season's featured matchup of the week, let me know and we can contact them and see what they will offer us.
For the last Shaw, we have the matchup that is as close as we have ever had to a complete skunking.  Coming into the matchup, John's team had been eliminated and had really nothing to play for.  Kyler's team needed only to make sure that they didnt get destroyed, and they would walk easily into the postseason. Well...

Team R RBI SB AVG OBP SLG W K ERA WHIP QS SV+H Score
KIODL 20 14 6 0.256 0.309 0.390 2 38 2.60 1.16 4 9 11
BySs 9 11 0 0.192 0.282 0.300 1 39 6.61 1.55 3 7 1

So much for that.  Luckily Kyler got some help from Tom and I and was able to hold onto his spot anyways.  Also luckily for Kyler, Tim Hudson struck out 1 Detroit Tiger in 6 innings of Sunday work to give him his only category win this week.  If he hadnt pulled that category out, BySs would have been the first and only team to fail to win at least 1 category in a week.  So thanks, Tim Hudson, no one at next year's draft really wanted to see Kyler have to the old Euchre skunking penalty of running to the nearest stop sign in the nude.

I am going to go through these kinda quickly.  John's team had a decent week, but really the story of this matchup is the epic terribleness of the Backyard Nonstars.  The DLers offense featured a pair of players who had legitimately good weeks, several mediocre to poor weeks and one disaster.  Josh Harrison (421/421/579 3R 2RBI) and Coco Crisp (429/429/429 0R 0RBI 3SB) led the way while Albert PooHoles (5R 5RBI) and Lucas Duda (.414 OBP 3R 4RBI) pitched in.  Only Jacoby Bellsbury tanked hard this week with a 130/160/304 3R 2RBI line.

Kyler, on the other hand, had exactly 1 player who would qualify as either legitimately good or mediocre (Jonathon Lucroy, who with a 320/414/440 1R 2RBI week, was actually pretty solid).  The other 6 starters (Daniel Murphy was in the lineup but on the DL) were all terrible with the now injured for the rest of the season Melky Cabrera (143/188/214 1R 1RBI) and Matt Adams (111/150/278 1R 3RBI) being the lowest of the low. Yaisel Puig has started losing time to Joc Pederson in the LA outfield, as Puig is only 23 of 126 with 13 walks, 3 2bs, 0 HRs, 4 RBIs and 1 SB since August 1st (182/259/206 slash line) and was 143/333/143 this week. As a team, ByNs hit 192/282/300 and combined for 1 fewer RBI than Nelson Cruz.  If they had ended up missing the playoffs, I would feel bad about making fun of them this much.  But since they made it, it will go down as just a terrible week instead of the league defining collapse that it almost was.

For the pitching, Kylers struggles continued, as only Craig Kimbrel (0.50) finished with a WHIP under 1.00 (Alex Cobb finished with 6K 0.00/1.00 1 QS as well).  Otherwise, Sonny Gray (2k 10.80/1.80), Henderson Alvarez (1K 11.57/1.71) and Rafael Soriano (5K 13.50/2.63 1 SV/H) continued their recent struggles.  Gray has seen his effectiveness decrease as his innings have increased, Alvarez has struggled because he is Henderson Alvarez and has now been replaced by the recently acquired Doug Fister in Kyler's starting lineup and Kyler has been trying to trade Soriano for the better part of 2 months now, with no one taking the bait.  With Danny Duffy coming out of his Saturday start after one pitch due to "discomfort", Kyler's staff is coming apart at the worst possible time.  I think I am starting to smell a "No one believed in us" upset run to the league championship.

For John, the season ended much like it started...with some dominant pitching.  Most of the names are different, as Masahiro Tanaka, Jose Fernandez and Johnny Cueto have been replaced by James Shields, Matt Shoemaker's Beard (until this week) and Johnny Cueto's dreadlocks.  Cueto has been a rock all season, with his 1W 8K 1.29/1.14 1QS line bringing his season total to 17W 213K 2.23/0.98 in 214 innings.  Shields (1W 6K 0.00/0.36 1QS) is having a bit of a down year and Mark Buehrle (4K 0.00/0.75 1QS this week) has come crashing down to Earth after his sensational start to the season, and I am curious to see if either of these guys will be kept.  Matt Shoemaker (2K 6.75/2.25) had a rough week, but had entered on a 21 inning scoreless streak and has been a huge piece of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim California USA Earth's rotation.  With his work as both a SP and RP this year, he will likely retain that designation for 2015 and his numbers 14W 117K 3.25/1.10 in 121 2/3 innings mean that the LAAACUE will crayola him into a starting rotation that should feature Jered Weaver, Garrett Richards, CJ Wilson, Shoemaker, and Tyler Skaggs or Hector Santiago...not quite the Dodgers rotation, but nothing to sneeze at either.

I am still waiting on a couple of the stragglers to get their choices in for next season's keepers.  Right now keepers due March 1, due at the draft and the graduated plan with some due at different points all have 2 votes.

Prepare yourself for the closet Vikings fans!

Seriously! Three people have told me this already today!
Crazy endings and some incredable upsets highlighted yesterday's week 1 action. I was extremely excited for the first Sunday of the season and it did not disappoint. There were 3 games that were won on the last play of the game, and 7 of the games were decided by 7 points or less. Watching Tom Brady get crushed on nearly every drop back in the second half made me smile and seeing Tony Homo throw three awful picks on three straight drives was a thing of beauty. I did however, make the horrible decision of watching the murder of what used to be the St. Louis Rams. The Rams looked awful without Sam Bradford and even worse without Shaun Hill, and when Chris Long went down I think it was a sign that it's going to be one of those kinds of years for the Rams this season. I know there are plenty of dilusional Vikings fans that I'm going to have to deal with at work, on campus, and other places that aren't going to shut up about how they beat the Rams by nearly 30 points. However, I can honestly say I don't think they really did much to win that game; it was mostly the Rams gifting the game to them. I can't wait for the next 5 weeks of the season when the schedule for the Vikings is New England, New Orleans, Atlanta, Green Bay, Detroit. The Vikings fans can enjoy the 1 win now because that still may be the only win they have in late October.

Nobody cirlces the wagons like the Buffalo Bills!
Another crazy thing that happened this weekend was the Buffalo Bills going into solider field and beating a Bears team who many are predicting can make a deep postsesason run this season. I'm sorry Louie, Zach, and T but it has to be said, they won't make that kind of run with Cutler as there quarterback. Yes he has the arm strength, yes he has the size, yes he has the weapons, but what people seem to have forgot is that in his 9th year in the league he still has the knack for attempting some of the most idiotic passes. If you watched the game, can someone please explain to me how throwing the ball directly into 300 pound defensive tackle Kyle Williams' gut is a good idea. This Bears team is going to win their fair share of games this year, but until they get a quarterback who makes better decisions, especially in the 4th quarter when the game is on the line, they won't be making any noise in January. Also from this game, a hat tip goes to Fred Jackson for making Chris Conte look like a rag doll on that overtime run.

Can I get the ball more than 7 times Andy?
Some other interesting things that I noticed from the games yesterday were that Joe Flacco attempted 62 passes against the Bengals. If this is the Ravens plan to get back to the playoffs they are screwed. The only reason I can imagine they had him throw that much was becasue Ray Rice is suspended* sidenote: a new video was released from the Ray Rice incident and it makes you wonder how he is not in jail somewhere and suspended for the entire year* and because the Ravens are trying to get there moneys worth out of Flacco after giving him that awful contract a year ago. The other thing I noticed yesterday was that Jamaal Charles had 19 yards on 7 rushing attempts against a suprisingly strong Tennessee defense. I can imagine this is not what Josh was expecting when he drafted Charles with his first pick in the draft. Unless Kennan Allen goes off tonight and Nick Novak kicks a few 50 yard field goals, Josh can thank Charles and Doug Martin, who put up a goose egg, for his loss to Zach this week.

So after the first weekend of the season the crazyiness of the NFL season is in full swing. All five games in our fantasy league still have some players left to play in the Monday night double header so its still unclear as to who is going to win there matchups, so check out the blog tomorow to see the final scores and a recap of each matchup.

Week 22 waivers

Garrett might have gotten kinda sorta hazed.  At least his girlfriend
still likes him.
Here's a shout out to all the new visitors to the blog with the addition of the folks from Commish Kyler's Fantasy Extravaganza (there might even be some football involved in that fantasy) of Spectacularly Awesome Gentlemen.  Already today there have been 84 page views, which is one of the most heavily visited days (and only 1 to 3 of those page views are from Poland) which has us creeping up on 4000 total views (and about 13 different countries).  Not bad for 6 months on our small, not so lonely corner of the blogosphere.  And to those of you who arent playing football with us, I still like you, dont ever change, and I'll pour one out for both you and your homies this weekend (crap - am I going to incite a yearbook signing fest in the comments again?  There are only so many longing letters that a man can write to Garrett Richards and only so many ways to say "I am sorry that your knee exploded. Keep in touch. BFFAE! Have a great summer!")  For those of you who may be sad that you werent included in the football funtimes, I have two things to say to you: 1) suck it up Sally, the world isnt an inclusive place. and 2) Blame Kyler.  I am pretty sure that Kyler asked the people who were most active on the Blog (me (obvi -- DOUBLE PARENTHETICAL!!!!!), and the Ambiguously Gay duo of John and Tom.  We asked Uncle Jimmy, but he couldnt figure out why people would run into each other without skates on and why no one was carrying a stick, so he passed), so if you werent axed, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Anyways, on to the extremely paltry transactions from week 22.  There was a trade, but, since it was clearly the most exciting thing about the moves this week, it is going to wait for last.

SP, RP Carlos Carrasco - $5 - Les Moles - Drop RP Grant Balfour
Who knew they had press conferences where they players take the jersey off
when they are released?
I am not going to lie.  Not only did I have no idea that Grant Balfour was still owned in out league, I had no idea that he was still pitching in the Bigs.  He has fallen so far down the pecking order in the TB bullpen, that I am fairly certain that Joe Madden is calling on Dennis Quaid before he calls on Balfour in a close game.  Balfour's 5.07/1.56 ratios will be missed by exactly no one.  Carrasco, on the other hand, was missed by everyone.  There is a lot to love about a dual position pitcher who has 2.94/1.06 ratios and 96 punchouts in 95 innings.  His last start, while not great on the WHIP, was spectacular in its linescore.  5 1/3 innings pitched, 1 ER, 1BB 10K 10H.  Basically, he struck out 2 batters in every inning and gave up 2 hits in every inning...but somehow managed to escape with only 1 run allowed.  He wont be Houdini every start, and logic says that those hits will cluster better than they did on that day, but Carrasco is on a role right now, having given up 1 run or fewer in each of his 5 turns since returning to the starting rotation.  Just what Tom needed, another starter who he can slot into a RP spot.

C Yan Gomes - $2 - Bob's ATers - Drop OF Alex Rios
This is Yan's EDate profile picture.  Bob has it bookmarked.
I've posted before about how Kyler and I email back and forth often during the day and how we change the subject line for shits and giggles.  Well, lately the subject has been "willyoubemykatiecouric." And I will Kyler...I will.  After dropping Gomes last week for Stephen Vogt, Bob realized that Yan is his Katie Couric (the 10 hits in the last 6 games for Gomes probably didnt hurt) and that Bob really couldnt function without Yan Gomes on his roster som/where.  I am not really sure what to say about Alex Rios.  He has been perfectly blah this year.  A 280/313/402 slash line with 17 stolen bases will keep a player rostered, but not get him much playing time in fantasy circles.  He has been injured on and off and been terribly unreliable in weekly leagues.  I am honestly surprised that the best team in the league rostered him for this long.

TRADE!!!!!!!!
UCCMA gets RP Koji Uehara, SP Jose Filthnandez
BySs gets 2b, 3b Matt Carpenter, SP Doug Fister, SP, RP Wade Davis

Matt Carpenter approves this trade.
This trade is brought to you by the number 2 and the letter Holy Shit.  After having won the Jose Fernandez waiver auction, Kyler was poised to carry the big Cuban into next year until Daniel Murphy's injury left him with no alternative at 2b heading into the playoffs (and the oh so appealing wire options of Brian Dozier, Kolton Wong, and Scooter Gennett...I was hoping for a Scooter sighting).  The trade gives Kyler a reliable 2b in Carpenter (though he is no Daniel Murphy), a dominating RP in Davis and insurance in Fister against Sonny Gray continuing to struggle (you can substitute Gerrit Cole, Tim Hudson or Henderson Alvarez in that sentence and it is just as valid...man that rotation is in rough shape with Darvish out and the young guys hitting a wall, Hudson remember he is 39372 years old and Henderson Alvarez turning back into Henderson Alvarez).  Jimmy, with the newly promoted Javier Baez gaining 2b eligibility and Mookie Betts with SS eligibility and a solid starting spot in CF in Boston for the time being, pounced on the chance.  The relievers and Fister just kind of fell into place.  The whole thing took less than a couple hours to come together (they were both texting me about it).  It is a bit surprising that Jim would trade away his starting 2b and two pitchers that he uses every week for a badly fading Koji Uehara (6.97/1.84 ratios over the last 30 days) and a Jose Fernandez who wont be healthy until 2015...right as we head into the playoffs that he will almost assuredly be a part of, but the opportunity to acquire a true front line SP at a reduced cost proved to be to much of an allure.  The combination of Fernandez, Scherzer and Tyson Ross should provide an excellent base for the rotation in 2015 (and I am just guessing on who he will keep, but I cant imagine he would not keep a guy he just traded for, last years AL Cy Young winner and one of the biggest break out pitchers in the NL this year).  Sorry Jim, I understand the rationale, but for this year the carrots go to Kyler. UCCMA < BySs

It's that time of year again

So this is the point in the year where the blog will now morph from strictly baseball to baseball and football. Louie will still be taking care of the wonderful baseball portion of the blog until seasons end, but I will be doing the football posts, atleast until baseball is finished. We tryed to have a seperate page for football but it wasn't working so we are just going to put them both on the main page. If your looking to read about baseball stop reading here! The rest of this post is all about The Awesome Guys fantasy football league.

We've had to wait 7 months but it's is time for meaningful NFL games to begin. This season marks the 5th year of our fantasy football league, however this is the first year we will have a blog connected to it. The blog came into existence with the fantasy baseball league that some of us were in over the summer and it was a great success. There will be similar posts for the fantasy football season (recaps, waiver pick-ups, injuries, and more).

So, I figured for the first post I would give a small bio on every team and its owner:

Hey there pretty boy!
Rolling Meadows Mustangs (Zach) Defending Champion- Zach comes into the season trying to be the first owner to repeat as league champion. The Mustangs (named after Zach's high school team) rode a solid 9-4 record to the playoffs behind LeSean McCoy and Drew Brees. He decided not to tab either one of those guys as a keeper, yet he was lucky enough to get the number one pick and redraft McCoy this year. Zach drafted Andrew Luck this year to replace Brees, though Luck won't put up the same numbers, he should be a very good fantasy quarterback this year.

Show Me Them TD's (Kyler) 2012 League Champion- Last year my team was not very good and it was apparent early in the season. I ended up tied for 7th with a 5-8 record, although I did win the Toilet Bowl Consolation Championship. I kept Jimmy Graham from my team from last year because he is far and away the best tight end in the league and he was really the only star player on my team from last year who isn't suspended (I had Josh Gordon). This year I feel like I have a much better team than I did last year, and I went with a bunch of Packers to make it easier on myself to cheer for my fantasy players on Sunday.

Baghdad Bombers (Josh) 2011 League Champion- Not only does Josh own the best name in the league, he also owns the greatest playoff upset in the league. The Bombers went 8-5 in 2011 before destroying his opponent in the first round of the playoffs and then pulled off the incredible upset, beating a 12-1 Team Bashaw team by two points (217-215). This year the Bombers took Jamaal Charles in the first round to try and carry the team. Josh also is banking on a comeback season from RG3 this year as he drafted him to be the starting quarterback of his team.

Milwaukee Warriors (Jason) 2010 League Champion- The warriors won the inaugural league championship over yours truely, back when we were seniors in high school. Back then Jason had an amazing back field of Chris Johnson and Arian Foster, so this year its only fitting that he drafted Chris Johnson again. Its been a long three years for the warriors as they haven't finished better than 5th since winning the title. Jason has optimism for his team this year however,I know this because he text me right after the draft saying he feels like his team is stacked, and to be honest his starting lineup is damn good. If Reggie Bush racks up a lot of fantasy points in the high powered Lions offense and Colin Kapernick still kill other fantasy owners (and Packers linebackers) with his legs, there may be another title in the near future for the Warriors.

Kalamazoo Red Hawks (Chris) 4 years, 1 playoff appearance- This one is hard for me to believe. Chris, or Dr. Panda as I often refer to him, has been in this league since the beginning and I knew he never won a championship, but when I looked up past seasons and saw he's only made it to the playoffs once...WOW! In fact he made it as the 4th and final team the first year of the league and has finished progressivly worse every year since. Last year the Red Hawks were hurt by injuries (see what I did there) and finished dead last. They also had some trouble filling out a full roster from time to time (I hope that's not a problem this year). In case you didn't notice, the Red Hawks were the only team that didn't join the draft this year and were therefore on auto pick. This caused them to draft a lot of suspended (Ray Rice and Dwayne Bowe) or soon to be suspended guys (Le'Veon Bell). However, if there is one glimmer of hope for this team this year it is that they drafted Peyton Manning and if he has a season anywhere close to the one he did last year, he could single-handedly carry this team to the playoffs.

Team Mustangs (Tyler) Back to back 2nd place finishes- Tyler (who from here forward will be called T because he lost the right to the -yler part of his name when he lost to me all three times in fantasy baseball) is the twin brother of Zach (see above) and has finished runner up in his first two years in the league. Last year's Twin Duel to the Death Championship match saw a matchup of the Mustangs vs. Mustangs, and was easily won by Zach. The mere fact that T allows his team to still have the word team at the beginning of its name tells you he may be a little off upstairs. With that being said, the T Mustangs stole the RMHS Mustangs qb, Drew Brees, this year and are looking for pay back for last years shellacking. The team looks fairly solid but perhaps a better starting running back than Toby Gerhart or Stevan Ridley would help carry this team to a championship.

Skittle Power!
Wisconsin ArcticCats (Gunnar Paul Huber!) 2nd year in the league- The ArcticCats are entering their second year in the league and may still be a little bitter after how last season ended. Guber Huber lost to the Red Hawks (remember they were the worst team last year) on the last week of the regular season to lose the 4th and final playoff spot. The bitter defeat more than likely caused Gunnar to go into fits of rage where he yells nonsensical phrases for no reason. Either way the ArcticCats are looking to make it into the playoffs for the first time, and thanks to guys like Aaron Rodgers, Antonio Brown, and Marshawn Lynch, Guber's dreams may finally come true.

APeeing In The Wind (Louie) First year in the league- Louie is one of three new poeple to join the league this year, after turning down the oppurtunity to join a year ago. He is from my fantasy baseball league, and also happens to be married to my girlfriends sister for those of you that don't know. This is the second leauge that me in Louie are in together (last year his daughter kicked both our asses en route to the championship in the other league). When it comes to this year's team, APeeing In The Wind got the luck of the draw with taking over a team that had Adrian Peterson on it, making the draft a little easier on Louie knowing that he already had a stud running back in the bank. He also drafted a couple of guys looking for bounce back years in Tom Brady and Julio Jones. Both of which should put up better stats than last year should their team and them stay healthy.

YOU'LL KNOW SOON (John) First year in the league- First of all, why the hell is your whole team name capitalized? Anyways, John is the second of the three new people joining the league this year and he also comes to us from the fantasy baseball league. I can only imagine the sadness felt by John when he found out he couldn't draft Carlos Gomez for fantasy football. YOU'LL KNOW SOON drafted a solid lineup for this season headlined by star wide reciever Brandon Marshall. He also drafted Matt Stafford to be his starting quarterback which could pay off big if the Lions offense does what it should (destroy everyone with all the weapons they have).

Football Is Not My FORTE (Tom) First year in the league- Tom is the third and final new member of the league this year. He also comes from the fantasy baseball league, where I have learned a few things about him. First, Tom and John are mortal enemies/ life partners, second Tom doesn't follow football as close as baseball (hence the name), and thirdly his team will sit at the bottom of the standings for most of the year and then come out of nowhere and take over 1st in your division in the blink of an eye. Now when it comes to his football team year, Football Is Not My FORTE has a lot of stud fantasy players including A.J. Green, Matt Forte, Julius Thomas, and the Seahawks D/ST. This teams only weak point may be starting Pierre Thomas at running back but we'll see who ends up getting the majority of carries in New Orleans. When it comes down to it Tom's team is probably in the top 2 for best starting lineup heading into the season (along with Jason).

So there you have it. You now know a little more about everyone in the league, and how well they've done in the past. Tonight starts our 17 week journey to find a champion with a big matchup in Seattle. I will try to post something every day during the week for this blog and possibly on the weekends if the women is working,. So strap in cause it's going to be a fun ride.

Week 21 Recaps - For realsies, yo.

So, I know that its Wednesday.  I know that I havent posted anything since last Friday.  And it hurts me as much as it hurts you (maybe moreso me than you).  I have come to greatly value this blog as a way to output my creative juices...and I was going to make a joke about outputting juices, but this is a family establishment and I am sure that most of you can come up with your very own joke about the outputting of creative juices.  Anyways, as the season winds down, I find myself getting a bit sad (and not just because my team is treating the last 3 weeks of the season like the Titanic treated Artic Ocean or like Craig treated Debo) that the season is coming to an end.  We will continue with football (I think Kyler is working on something now), but for me, its not the same.  I have never played football competitively (though I did used to play a mean dual threat QB in backyard and intramural games) so my understanding of it and appreciation for it are only based in what I think it feels like to do.  I have never stood in the pocket and thrown a pass to a tightly covered receiver while multiple 290+ pounds gentlemen try to cause great bodily harm to me.  I have never took a handoff and bounced it outside to find a 250 pounder who runs a 4.6 second 40 yard dash waiting.  I have never seen a pass thrown in my direction and tried to coordinate my arrival and collision with a WR with the arrival of the ball.  I can only think about what those things must be like because I have watched them so many times and heard countless players talk about them; I dont experience them while I am watching.  I have faced a 95 MPH fastball (you have to basically start your stride when the pitcher thinks about throwing the ball).  I have tried to hit a 87 MPH curveball that dropped from over my head about 4 feet in front of the plate to in the dirt just behind it (trying to hit that thing was like trying to hit a fly with a toothpick. the solution...hit the first straight thing that I saw in every other at bat against that pitcher...and it worked decently well until he stopped throwing straight things).  I have faced a runner barreling down on me while I am turning a 5-4-3 DP at second (if you fall on top of them with your elbow pointed down, it isnt considered dirty and they tend not to try to take you out very often in future encounters).  When I see these things during games, I feel the experience...I live it with the players.  My mind takes what it sees and internalizes it in a way that connects me with every moment of every baseball game, and every player within that game (except the pitchers, which is ok because they arent really players anyways...they are just a necessary evil for starting the action) that I watch.  I apparently extend this out to other things in life sometimes as well.  Like, when my 3 year old is eating a snack and I am watching her, my wife always makes fun of me because I move my mouth like I am chewing, even though she is the one that is eating.  I have done this since she was old enough to eat solid foods...and it is completely unconscious and I cant stop doing it.
Basically, all of that is my way of saying that, though I am excited for footbal season..I love footballs, who doesnt?  My 3 year old says her favorite player is Jay Cutler and tortures her mother by constantly saying "Go Bears!" and this weekend told a story about Adrian Peterson getting lost in the dark forest and being chased by Lions until he was saved by a superhero named Cece...and that she likes him because he is on her fantasy team (he is...and she won our family fantasy football league last year beating both Kyler and me)...and I have all of this on video to document for whenever she decides to bring her first boyfriend home to meet the parents...I dislike that football means the end of baseball, as that is where my true sports love lies.

Here is where we are at right now:

Rather than look at last week (I am sure by now you have all had a chance to peruse the results including my second straight complete no show...youre welcome Zach), I am going to look at what each team needs to do in order to make the playoffs and what those potential matchups might look like.

Bob's ATers - Bob doesnt need to do anything.  He has clinched the Bone Thugs Division title, the #1 overall seed and the bye week that comes with it.  His team has been truely dominant...Bob's team is 55 games over .500...the next closest is Uncle Jimmy at 10 games over .500.  If there is a prohibitive favorite in this horse race, Bob is the midget riding it.

UCCMA - Uncle Jimmy needs to not lose to Kevin's Huckleberries by a 12-0 or 11-0-1 score in order to secure a playoff spot...and I am pretty sure that he will accomplish that easily (he is up 8-3 as of this writing).  Jim is locked out of a bye (22.5 games behind Bob will do that), but could finish anywhere from 3rd to 6th, depending on his week and others.  His most likely first round matchup is against Kyler's Backyard SuperStars.

ZAttack - Zach is in the driver's seat in Harmony, holding a 1.5 game lead over Les Moles.  Zach is facing Bob this week (and is up 9-3) and needs to beat Bob by 2 more wins than Tom would beat Tyler by (currently 5-5).  So basically, Zach needs his brother to do the dirty work so that he can make get the first round bye.  Were Zach to totally tank, he could miss the playoffs, but he would need to lose 11-1 to Bob AND Dusty would need to win 11-1 to make that happen...and in that case I think that Zach still makes the playoffs because it would mean that MBHB would have also lost 11-1.  The odds of Zach missing the playoffs are less than 1%, but he could very easily drop from the top spot in the division to the #6 spot in the playoffs.

MBHB - My team has decided to phone in the end of the season.  In the last 2 weeks we are 4-19-1 as John's injury bug seems to be easily communicable.  Luckily, we had a large enough cushion to handle that nose dive.  We are facing Dusty this week (currently up 7-4).  If we hold on and beat him, it makes all this other mumbo jumbo meaningless and then we are all just jockeying for position amongst the 6 playoff spots.  In order for MBHB to miss the playoffs, Dusty would need to by us by 8.5 wins this week, so 12-0, 11-1, 10-1-1...something along those lines.  With the matchup where it is on Wednesday, it would be unlikely that this result would happen.  MBHB can still finish anywhere from 3rd to 6th place, but we will definitely be playing in the first round, most likely right now, against Tom's Molesters.

Les Moles - Tom's squad is up 7.5 games on Dusty, meaning that in order for Tom to miss the playoffs, his team would need to lost to Tyler while getting fewer than 3 wins and that Dusty would need to beat MBHB with at least 8 more wins than Tom (so if Tom got 3, Dusty would need 11.  If Tom got 2, Dusty would need 10, ect.)  Unlike with Zach, Tom could fall behind Dusty and not overtake MBHB.  If MBHB and Les Moles were to lose by identical scores, MBHB would remain in the playoffs and Les Moles would miss them.  Again, this is very unlikely as Tom's team has been the hottest in the league over the second half of the season.  Look for Tom to finish in 5th place and take on the Hitless Bastards in round 1.

BySs - I just realized that all 6 playoff teams are over .500 for the first time since the first week of the season.  Congrats guys, we dont all suck.  Kyler's team is the one in the most danger, though it really isnt that much danger.  For as close as we have all been all season, there is a surprising amount of distance between 6th and 7th place.  In order for Dusty to jump Kyler (metaphorically, I have seen Dusty and I have seen Kyler and I have seen them together.  There is not an operation in existence that would give Dusty the ability to physically jump Kyler, though I would love to see him try), Dusty would need to have a great week and Kyler would need to have a craptastic one...it would need to be somewhere in the vacinity of Kyler winning 3 games and Dusty winning 9.  Kyler's team is doing its best to make this happen (holy balls that pitching is terrible so far this week), but Dusty needs both parts of that equation to happen in order to have a chance, and his team is down (though they arent down much and are playing decently well).  Kyler's boys need to step it up to ensure he isnt scoreboard watching both baseball and football all weekend.  Kyler could jump into first place with a solid week and a mediocre one by Zach, but that isnt in the cards so far this week.

Dust Bunnies - To get it, its simple.  Beat MBHB by more than 9 wins this week.  Short of that, they need a whole lot of help.

MTMTAS - This is the extreme dark horse team that hasnt been talked about much recently.  The Moors are 7.5 back of Kyler, so they are a bit of a long shot, but a 10 or more win week coupled with 2 or less win week for BySs would propel Tyler into the playoffs and knock Kyler into football season.

KIODL/Huckleberries - The season is over after this week, but there are keepers to be had.  I have not gotten a response back from everyone, so I will send out a few texts.  I am still waiting on Bob, Kevin, Tyler and Dusty and right now there isnt much clarity.  I can only say with any confidence is that keepers will not be due at the end of the 2014 MLB playoffs.

There were a couple of week 21 performances that were worth noting:
Hitters:
Jose Abreu - Bob's ATers - 542/633/667 3R 5RBI 1SB (just another week for the Cuban Missle Crisis)
Hunter Pence - MTMTAS - 520/581/680 7R 6RBI (finally doing things other than scoring runs)
Tacoby Bellsbury - KIODL - 522/500/1174 6R 9RBI 2SB (where has this been all year Tacoby?)

Pitchers:
Alex Wood - Bob's ATers - 1W 18K 1.80/0.73 2QS
Jeff Samardzija - ZAttack - 1W 19K 1.69/0.69 2QS
Madison Bumgarner - MBHB - 2W 20K 0.60/0.47 2QS

I'll hit up the couple of waiver adds and the trade tomorrow.

Week 21 recaps

Hey all. I am home with the kiddos by myself today, so recaps and waivers will be on tape delay.  Don't worry though, there will be plenty of time to talk about how the Hitless Bastards tried to gift wrap th Harmony division title to the Zach Attack.
